Friends of the Environment

A lot has been happening at the Green Turtle Club since our last newsletter, following are just a few highlights:

During February, we had several groups here including the Flying Physicians, a group of doctors that are also private pilots. The Friends of the Environment held their very important planning meeting and retreat here at the Green Turtle Club. We are very proud that the Club was chosen as the venue for their retreat as they do wonderful work. For more information please see www.friendsoftheenvironment.org Pictured are the group and if you look closely you will see our very own Renee Nesbitt in the picture!

Jacquie Cronacher hosted a wonderful birthday party for her husband Roy at the Green Turtle Club

Congratulations

To Justin and Jacquie Horst from Reading Pennsylvania on their wedding held at the Green Turtle Club on the 11th of May 2009. Pictured are Jacquie and Justin and some of their 30 wedding guests that came with them and several members of the Bahamian Defense Force whom the couple met while on vacation here and invited to the wedding.

A wonderful time was had by all celebrating the marriage of Jay Gordon and Shirley Rinks. An excellent dinner of fresh Abaco Lobster tail and prime Filet Mignon was followed by wedding cake and dancing under the stars. Jay and Shirley are Yacht Club Members here at the Green Turtle Club and are here on Green Turtle Cay very often, we wish them many happy anniversaries celebrated right here under the stars at the Green Turtle Club!

Best Wishes to Jade and Matt Drndak from Miami Florida, who were married at the Green Turtle Club on the 11th of July with 50 of their friends and family attending. Jade wanted to be married on Green Turtle Cay after having spent many, many wonderful summers over the years with her Mom and Dad, traveling to GT Cay with the Grady Bunch Boating group.

On June 19th Jacquie Cronacher hosted a wonderful birthday party for her husband Roy at the Green Turtle Club. The Gully Roosters played and great food and good fun was the order of the night. Thank you to our Yacht Club Members, the Cronachers, for choosing the Green Turtle Club.

1st Annual Lionfish Derby - Photos Ken Jones

1st Annual Lionfish Derby

The first annual Lionfish Derby was held at the Green Turtle Club on June 5th and 6th and was a huge success. Over $5,000 in cash prizes were awarded and 25 boats with a total of 100 contestants caught more than 1400 lionfish. All were measured and weighed and some were cleaned and cooked with free lionfish to feed all that were willing to try, thumbs were up after tasting with the old "it tastes just like chicken" being heard all around! This invasive fish with no natural predators here in the Bahamas, is not native to the Bahamas and is killing our native grouper, snapper and lobster in droves. REEF sent Lad Akins, a scientist to educate and encourage people to catch, kill and eat the lionfish. What wasn't eaten was packed up and sent in coolers to be studied in Nassau at the College of the Bahamas. Mrs. Bobbie Lindsay from West Palm Beach organized the Derby and raised the money for prizes and got donations of gloves and nets used to catch the lionfish. She along with Brendal's Dive Center and the Green Turtle Club are looking forward to next year's Derby, which will be held on 17-19 of June 2010. Keep your eye on our website for more details. Free beers were given away compliments of Sands Beer and Kalik Beer and after the great buffet meal we had entertainment and dancing.

22nd Annual Green Turtle Club Fishing Tournament

22nd Annual Green Turtle Club Fishing Tournament

The 22nd Annual Green Turtle Club Fishing Tournament was held June 9-12, 2009. At the captain's meeting, the owners and anglers agreed to a complete release for billfish. This is the first time a Bahamian fishing tournament has eliminated the 110" minimum and gone all release for billfish. This same tournament has been releasing white marlin and sailfish for many years.

Congratulations to all the winners and participants! A great time was had by all, beautiful trophies and prints and fishing poles for prizes.

Thanks again to Tupps, Bristol Cellars and Burns House all from Marsh Harbour for sponsoring some of our "docktail" parties and Sands and Kalik Beers for donating beers. Also a big thank you to Grand Slam Fishing Tackle on Singer Island in Palm Beach for their sponsorship. Over $700 was raised during the tournament that was given to the Abaco Cancer Society.

Independence Day

Independence Day

The 4th of July holiday is always a great time to be on Green Turtle Cay. The Stranded Naked/Cheeseburger in Paradise Party was held on Fiddle Cay and this year had over 1000 people attending. The next day the Abaco Regatta started with their race off of Green Turtle Cay and then a party in the historic village of New Plymouth. Great fun was had by all, we are working on reviving our "Round the Turtle Race" that the Green Turtle Club held for years. Please send us any comments or suggestions that will help us in getting this race going again and watch the website and calendar of events for more information.
